Killing Floor Aggro Mechanics

Aggro is a Zed’s attraction to a player. If a specimen is aggroed on you, it looks at you, walks toward you, rotates toward you, reaches you, and attacks you.

Understanding aggro matters because it lets a team move danger away from weak positions, protect damaged players, and make kiting less chaotic.

TermMeaning
LOSLine of sight: whether a Zed can see a player.
Breaking LOSMoving behind walls, corners, or objects so a Zed stops directly seeing you.
KitingMoving around the map in planned loops instead of holding one static spot.

Vanilla KF Maps

On normal KF- maps, the simplified spawn flow is:

  1. The game chooses a squad to spawn.
  2. It chooses a suitable ZombieVolume.
  3. It selects a controller from living players.
  4. Spawned Zeds receive that player as an initial target.
  5. They begin moving toward that target, even if the target is far away or behind geometry.

That means initial aggro is not always about who is closest after the Zed appears. It can be assigned during the spawn process.

Objective Mode

On KFO- maps, the practical rule is simpler: Zeds strongly prefer the closest player. Objective items can modify attraction. Examples include carried objects like gas cans, transmitter parts, or explosives, while NPCs and objective actors such as Lockheart or breaker boxes can attract Zeds better than players in some situations.

Even then, distance usually matters most. If players spread correctly, they can often control or ignore special attraction variables.

Problem Zeds

Most vanilla Zeds follow predictable enough targeting rules. Some custom or special Zeds can behave much less cleanly.

The original note calls out Brutes and Jasons as high-risk examples. They can redirect unexpectedly, rage through teams, hit multiple targets without clear logic, or create dangerous chain reactions by knocking other Zeds into players.

Treat them as priority threats. If Brutes or Jasons are present, especially in groups or on maps with poor pathing, kill them quickly before relying on normal aggro control.

Team Use

Aggro is not only a solo survival trick. A coordinated team can:
